The Options Education Group is a single session group that focuses on the impact of substance use on physiology, perception and decision-making. Additionally, the group discusses the progression of use and ways to reduce the risk of substance use. The group focuses on the effects and use of alcohol, marijuana and other substances as relevant.
Participating in the Options Education Group
Participation may be a self-referral or the outcome of an Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities referral. Groups are confidential, facilitated by one therapist and on average 4 to 12 participating students.

If you are currently seeing a Barnes Center at The Arch therapist, talk with your therapist about the group and how it could benefit you. A group orientation is not required to attend an Options Education Group but a student should have completed an initial consultation during the current semester.
A Barnes Center at The Arch Options Program therapist will conduct a full assessment including alcohol and drug use, anxiety, depression and other mental health related issues. Please note, involvement with the Options Education Program is confidential.
Please arrive to Barnes Center at The Arch Counseling 10 minutes prior to your appointment time to complete the initial paperwork. After your paperwork has been reviewed, you will meet with a therapist for approximately 30 minutes. Based on the results of this assessment, your therapist will discuss recommendations with you. These may include further individual meetings, participating in the Options Groups, or a referral to an outside provider for a more thorough substance abuse assessment.
If an Options group is recommended, a Barnes Center at The Arch Counseling therapist will assist in your scheduling. A group orientation is not required to attend an Options Education Group but a student should have completed an initial consultation during the current semester.
At your initial appointment, you will be asked to sign a release of information allowing communication between the Options Program and the referring office. Upon request, any release of information will be fully explained. The purpose of this release is only to confirm your attendance at an appointment, information regarding your substance use with the referring party will not be shared. You have the right to decline signing any release. However, Barnes Center at The Arch Counseling will not be able to confirm your attendance without a signed release of information.
