Options Education Group

The Options Education Group is a single session group that focuses on the impact of substance use on physiology, perception and decision-making. Additionally, the group discusses the progression of use and ways to reduce the risk of substance use. The group focuses on the effects and use of alcohol, marijuana and other substances as relevant.

Participation may be a self-referral by calling Barnes Center at The Arch Counseling at 315.443.8000, speaking with your current Barnes Center therapist, or the outcome of an Office of Community Standards referral.

If an Options Group is recommended, a Barnes Center therapist will assist in your scheduling. A group orientation is not required but a student should have completed an initial consultation during the current semester.

At your initial appointment, you will be asked to sign a release of information allowing communication between the Options Program and the referring office. Upon request, any release of information will be fully explained. The purpose of this release is only to confirm your attendance at an appointment, information regarding your substance use with the referring party will not be shared. You have the right to decline signing any release. However, the Barnes Center at The Arch will not be able to confirm your attendance without a signed release of information.

Please arrive 10 minutes prior to your appointment time to complete the initial paperwork. During a 30-minute meeting, a Barnes Center Options Program therapist will conduct a full assessment including alcohol and drug use, anxiety, depression and other mental health related issues. Following, your therapist will discuss recommendations which may include further individual meetings, participating in the Options Groups, or a referral to an outside provider for a more thorough substance abuse assessment.

Please note, the Options Program does not provide evaluation or treatment services for court-ordered treatment.  For additional assistance locating a resource, please email the Barnes Center at The Arch or call 315.443.8000.

Groups are private, facilitated by Peer Educators and on average 4-12 participating students.
