Course Enrollment

Placement Exams

Before registering for classes, some schools and colleges, depending on your program, will require a Mathematics Placement Exam. If you are taking a foreign language course, you may need to take a Foreign Language Placement Exam. All students whose dominant language is not English must take the English Language Placement Exam.

  • Using your NetID and password, log in to MySlice.
  • Select the “Students Services” link and then the “Placement Exam” link.
  • Then complete needed exams.

For additional information, please visit the Placement Exams webpage or contact the Office of First-Year and Transfer Programs.

All students whose dominant language is not English must take the English Language Placement Exam. The purpose of the exam is to place students into an appropriate sequence of ENL/WRT courses for completing undergraduate writing requirements.

  • Please complete the registration form by Friday, June 4, 2021.
  • Fall 2021 exams will be hosted online Wednesday, June 9, and Thursday, June 10, 2021 EDT.
  • Please allow at most two hours to complete the exam. Students may take the exam at any time during the day of their chosen date.
  • After completing the registration form, students will be emailed (i.e. @syr.edu) on how to access the exam a few days prior to the exam.

For additional information or for questions, please contact an English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) coordinator, Dr. Matthew Hammill by email at mjhammil@syr.edu, Dr. Youmie Kim by email at ykim27@syr.edu or by calling 315.443.9484.

First-Year Course Selections and Registration

The course selection and registration process at Syracuse University is called First Term Enrollment Selections (FTES). Each school or college conducts this process differently and has a different deadline. Pay close attention to your school’s or college’s deadline for completing your FTES.

Prior to Syracuse Welcome, schools and colleges may contact students to register for classes. Within communications from your school/college, you will find class registration instructions. Please note, failure to submit your Immunization and Health History Form (a Required Task) may hinder the ability to view your schedule.

FTES will begin Monday, June 1, and the deadline to complete is Monday, June 21. Additional details will be available soon. To avoid missing important information, students are asked to check their Syracuse University email account (i.e. @syr.edu) often.

During the First Term Enrollment Selections (FTES) process, you will have the opportunity to select course titles and topics. You will not be able to select the specific course section. Following completing FTES, an advisor from your home school/college will use your FTES to register you for your first semester classes and as a result creating your course schedule.

  • Course Schedules: Will be available on MySlice. (Please note, you will need your NetID and password.)
  • Course Schedule Changes: During Syracuse Welcome, you will have time to meet with your advisor to discuss changes.
  • Honors Students: Within FTES, you will find a link for Honors Students additional information.
