The Office of Learning Communities believes strongly in the importance and value of peer-to-peer education and support. Peer Mentors – also known as ambassadors, peer educators, peer leaders, or a variety of other titles – provide encouragement, leadership, and academic support to incoming living learning community residents that is impactful and lasting. Although not required, most peer mentors previously lived in the same living learning community for which they serve now. This familiarity with course(s), instructors, activities and events, and community living has many positives and allows the peer mentor to continue their relationship with the LLC beyond their first year on campus.

The Peer Mentor position currently serves six of our Living Learning Communities. Please see the specific responsibilities of each below.

Overall Peer Mentor Duties

 Academic Resource Education

  • Help students identify personal success goals and strategies
  • Assist students in navigating institution academic resources such as Orange Success, Degree Works, and Blackboard
  • Spend a minimum of one hour a week on the LLC floor, checking in with students and offering academic support through scheduled weekly floor hour.
  • Provide academic support through student scheduled 1on1 appointments.

Academic Programming

  • Facilitate the creation of and remain a resource for study groups
  • Plan and implement two academic programs or workshops a semester tailored around academic resources specific to your LLC community or Clifton Strengths leadership philosophy
  • Collaborate with other LLC team members on programs and events as necessary

Academic Outreach and Support

  • Provide necessary referrals to campus academic support services
  • Support students in managing their academic difficulties
  • Use and create communication channels specific to LLC to promote academic workshops and academic support such as social media and GroupMe.

Training and Other Administrative duties

  • Adhere to SU and Office of Student Living policies
  • Participate in peer mentor training, staff meetings, and supervisor 1on1s
  • Greet students and parents on the LLC floor as a part of the Fall 2021 move-in
  • Attend LLC team meetings, welcome event, and the LLC Palooza
  • Assist with gathering feedback on the peer mentor program from students

Creativity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship LLC Specific Duties (Fall Semester Only)

  • Attend and assist in the management of the EEE110/ PAF 110 class that meets 10 times in the fall semester. Peer mentors are expected to be in attendance and possibly hold review sessions.
  • Conduct review sessions/study groups for LLC as needed (Fall semester)
  • Attend group events (Welcome picnic, Ropes course event, other planned events, etc.)

Compensation

Peer Mentors will have an opportunity to earn up to 50 hours at $12.50 hourly rate or $625.00 total for the Fall 2021 academic semester.

Peer Mentor Qualifications

  • Be in good academic standing with the university: 3.0 semester GPA and 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Be in good judicial standing with the University
  • Be able to commit to the PM position from August 23, 2021-December 17, 2021
    • Be able to commit up to 4 hours a week to the PM position
  • Be invested in student learning through encouraging academic success, exchanging meaningful dialogue, and supporting personal growth
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills and enjoy building relationships with students
  • Display strong organizational and time management skills
  • PMs are highly encouraged to live in their LLC buildings, however, it is not mandatory
  • Candidates who have related majors, taken LLC courses, or lived in an LLC previously will be given priority

  • Demonstrate effective communication skills and enjoy building relationships with students
  • Display strong organizational and time management skills

  • Host 1 hour review sessions per week with LLC students for EXE 295 and BIO 121 in the fall semester and BIO 123/124 in the spring
  • Implement study groups for EXE 295, BIO 121, BIO 123/124 and HEA 332

Compensation

Peer Mentors will have an opportunity to earn up to 50 hours at $12.50 hourly rate or $625.00 total for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Peer Mentors may earn one credit of PPE 290 (Independent Study) toward either the fall or spring semester, dependent upon student academic credit load.

Peer Mentor Qualifications

  • Be in good academic standing with the university: 3.0 semester GPA and 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Successful completion of EXE 295 (Introduction to Exercise Science), and BIO 121, BIO 123/124 (General Biology I and II) with a grade of “B” or higher
    • Be in good judicial standing with the University
    • Be able to commit to the PM position from August 23, 2021-May 4, 2022 or the full Fall and Spring terms of the academic year.
    • Be able to commit up to 4 hours a week to the PM position
  • New PMs are highly encouraged to live in their LLC buildings, however, it is not mandatory
  • Be invested in student learning through encouraging academic success, exchanging meaningful dialogue, and supporting personal growth
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills and enjoy building relationships with students
  • Display strong organizational and time management skills
  • PMs are highly encouraged to live in their LLC buildings, however, it is not mandatory. Preference will be given to candidates willing to live on the floor
  • Candidates who have related majors, taken LLC courses, or lived in an LLC previously will be given priority

  • Help students navigate and understand Core Competencies needed for post undergraduate degrees in medical fields

International Relations Specific Duties(Fall Semester Only)

  • Coordinate/facilitate review/study sessions for PSC 124 quizzes (4) and final exam (1) during the fall semester (5 hours/fall semester)
  • Attend and assist in the management of the PSC 124 class that meets 15 times in the fall semester. Peer mentor is expected to prepare for, attend and participate in one class session each week (15 hours/fall semester).
  • Attend IRLLC team planning meetings (8 hours)
  • Attend and assist in the planning and implementation of IRLLC faculty connected programs, Fall retreat, site visits, and/or service project (20 hours per semester)

Compensation

The Peer Mentor will have an opportunity to earn up to 70 hours at $12.50 hourly rate or $875.00 total for the Fall 2021 academic semester.

In addition to the IRLLC Peer Mentor duties listed above, the IRLLC Peer Mentor may earn 1 academic experience credit (IRP 270/470) in the Fall semester by helping faculty member/IRLLC advisor to prepare lesson plans for and to participate in one class discussion session each week in PSC 124 International Relations.  These “Fun Friday” sessions use music, graphics/videos, and interactive exercises to illustrate and bring to life the major themes/concepts explored in the course for that week’s unit.  The IRLC Peer Mentor may earn 1 credit for this “teaching practicum.”

  • Be in good academic standing with the university: 3.0 semester GPA and 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Be in good judicial standing with the University
  • Be able to commit to the PM position from August 23, 2021- December 17, 2021.
  • Be able to commit up to 5 hours a week to the PM position
  • Be invested in student learning through encouraging academic success, exchanging meaningful dialogue, and supporting personal growth
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills and enjoy building relationships with students
  • Display strong organizational and time management skills
  • Recommended to live in the building in which the IRLC living learning community resides for the 2020-2021 academic calendar year.
  • Candidates who have related majors, taken LLC courses, or lived in an LLC previously will be given priority placement

Timeline

  • February 8th-February 28th : Peer Mentor candidates can apply online
  • March 29th- April 1st: Peer Mentor candidate interviews
  • April 5th: LC Office sends offer letter & contract to selected candidates (via email)
  • April 9th: Accept/decline deadline for all Peer Mentor candidates
