SummerStart is an exclusive opportunity for incoming first-year students to get ahead prior to starting their fall semester at Syracuse University. Easing the transition to college life, students will get ahead by earning credits toward their degree, making friends, experiencing all that campus life has to offer, and connecting with faculty and staff—all before the fall semester has started!

  • Program Dates: Monday, July 19–Friday, August 27, 2021
  • Arrival and Orientation: Saturday, July 17-Sunday, July 18, 2021

All students should be moved in and ready to begin orientation by 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 17, 2021, prior to the start of the program.

All SummerStart students will live in Ernie Davis Hall (619 Comstock Ave., Syracuse, NY 13210) during the six-week program, offering an opportunity to build community, make friends and acclimate to the residential living experience.

A skilled resident advisor (RA) will live with students in Ernie Davis who will provide guidance and support, host programming, and build community within the residence hall. Full-time residential staff also live in the building and are trained to provide a supportive and secure environment that encourages a sense of community conducive to study and relaxation. All rooms are double occupancy and roommates are assigned.

Dining facilities are conveniently located within the Ernie Davis residence hall. A full meal plan is included in your program cost and is available seven days a week. The meal plan offers options that include deli, grill, salad and a dessert bar. Vegetarian and kosher selections are available.

The University will assist students with moving into their fall 2021 housing assignment on Friday, Aug. 20 and Saturday, Aug. 21.

Yes, all students are required to take the placement exams, which are used to advise students regarding their placement in the appropriate course.  The Math placement exam is available via MySlice > Student Services > Placement Exams > Take Placement Exams.

All students will be contacted via their official Syracuse University e-mail (i.e. @syr.edu) by their school/college advisor approximately one to two weeks prior to arrival for the program to discuss options for their class schedule.

SummerStart attempts to limit class size to 20 students. The small group, seminar like class allows instructors to give students one-on-one attention and gives students a better transition to college coursework. However, if a student does not enroll in a SummerStart section, courses may be slightly larger.

The cost of the program is substantially discounted compared to the cost of a typical summer session at Syracuse University.  The comprehensive fee for the six-week program is $7,197, which includes tuition, housing, meals and program activities. The breakdown is as follows:

  • $4,865 Tuition
  • $2,332 Program fee (includes housing, meals and program activities)

Please also remember that the cost of textbooks and educational supplies is estimated to be $200–$250.

“SummerStart set the foundation for my entire academic and professional career at Syracuse University. My favorite experience was being a part of the SummerStart seminar which taught me how to become a successful college student and was the setting in which I learned how to engage with the many resources and opportunities on our campus. The individual attention and support I received has inspired me to do everything I can to provide for future students and make their experience as fulfilling as mine.”
